Welcome to another addition of ToG’s monthly update! We have news on new events and also other news that has happened round the forum of late and new additions to the forum. We hope you enjoy this update.
Merry Christmas | Happy holidays!!
We’ve finally hit the December month again! And that can only mean one thing! Whats that you ask? Well Christmas of course! We all wish you all a very merry Christmas and hope you have a great day and enjoy the festivities! If you don’t celebrate Christmas then we hope you enjoy whatever other festivity you are celebrating.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! Ho ho ho! And to help celebrate the festive season a Christmas template has been designed to get you in the mood. We hope you enjoy it. (Even if it was rushed a little... =X).
Rumours of a certain staff member departing:
Its come to our attention that throughout the Guild there are quite a few rumours concerning one of the Staff Team stepping down... And that staff member is none other than YK. Despite having some reservations about staying he has thought it best to stick with the Staff Team as a Super Mod and get back to his usual active state. So there you have it, it seems he is staying. Thankfully for us, most of the problems that were holding him back from ToG are now gone.
UK Wii Launch!!
Ok, so not necessarily a forum later news update but its such a great console its worthy of its own article. The Wii is set to be released on the 8th of December in the UK so that means only 7 days left really until we UKers can get our hands on it! It was released earlier in the US and Rand al’Thor is going to have his say on the console:
Rand Reviews: The Wii!
The Wii has been available here in the USA for a few weeks, now, and I was able to get my console on launch day. So I've had plenty of time with the console. Is the Wii all it is hyped to be? Let's find out.
As soon as I got the box, I noticed that, on the box, the statement that the Wii came bundled with Wii Sports was a sticker attached to the box. This means that the Wii Sports bundle is only for a limited time after launch. I'd guess that, a year from now, the Wii will no longer be bundled with the Wii. This bundle is a special offer for those who get the Wii in the initial run of the console.
So I got home, and opened the box. The system and accessories are neatly packaged in two card board trays. The design of the packaging reflects the minimalist design of the Wii console itself. Most everything is packed in soft plastic wrap. But I wasted no time in unpacking everything and setting the console up.
It doesn't take long to set the Wii up. There are only three cable accessories to connect to the back of the console, those being the cables that connect with the television set, the power supply, and the sensor bar. The only new accessory you'll have to deal with is the sensor bar. And this is not that difficult to set up. You just look at the television set, and figure out if, from the angle you'll be facing the set, if the bar needs to go on top of or below the television set. I always set the bar below the set, as that works best for me. Once you have everything connected, time to power on the Wii.
First thing you'll notice when you connect the power supply is the red LED light on the Power Button on the console. This is one console that you can't actually turn off. When not in use, the console reverts to Standby mode, which is a mode that uses just barely any electricity. The point for this is WiiConnect24. If you have the Wii online, the Wii will always be connected to WiiConnect24, and the console will be ready to receive updates and anything else made available on the service. The only way to completely power down the console is to disconnect the power supply. That's not a bad thing, since the Wii uses barely any power when in Standby mode.
Another thing you'll notice is the blue light. In all the publicity for the Wii, we've seen that sleek (dare I say sexy?) blue light surrounding the disc-loading tray. It was implied by all of that that the blue light would always remain on. This enticed a lot of gamers anticipating the Wii. Unfortunately, the blue light doesn't work like that. The blue light is hardly ever on. It flashes once or twice when you bring the system out of standby into active mode, and again when you insert a disc. But, the rest of the time, the blue light is off. Oh, well. Little matter, in the overall scheme of things.
Now onto what the system does. Remember how, with the Gamecube, whenever you powered the system on, you saw that little cube trace out the GCN logo, and heard that catchy jingle? That's gone, with the Wii. All you get is a health and safety warning, advising you to consult the manual for health warnings. Then you press a button on the Wii remote, and the LEDs along the bottom of the Wii remote will flash a few times, as it syncs with the console. Then the Wii will proceed into the main menu.
Here is the main menu of the Wii. Along the top, you've got the following channels: Disc Channel, Mii Channel, Photo Channel, Wii Shop Channel, Forecast Channel, and News Channel. Unless you've got the Wii online, you can forget about the following channels: Wii Shop, News, and Forecast. The Disc Channel is the one you'll likely go to the most. That is where you access Wii and GameCube games. If you are going to play Wii Sports, head over to Mii Channel to make a Mii character, if you wish. The options in creating and customizing your Mii are not as robust as you may have expected, if you've tried the Flash Mii Creator that's been offered online, at JoyStiq. You can't really modify face shapes and hair sizes. Everything else works out pretty well.
You can go into the Wii Options, from the main menu. It is the option on the lower-left corner of the main menu. From there, you can check the memory storage of the Wii, as well as GCN Memory Cards. The other option in this section is to access an array of options for the Wii console. These include changing sensitivity for the Wii remote, setting parental controls, sound options, etc. You can also find information like the MAC Address for the console, here.
But let's try a game, shall we? So I go to the Wii Disc Channel, and pop in the Twilight Princess disc. The loading of discs is nice. You just insert the disc, and it slides in. Just try not to have a finger in the center of the Wii disc, okay?
It doesn't take all that long for the Wii to read the game disc, actually. Within a few seconds, the disc will load, and you'll see the title of the game pop up on the Wii Disc Channel.
Oh, a side note about the channels: if you are in a channel, and want to switch to another, you don't have to back out to the main menu. You can scroll left or right via the icons on the left/right of the screen, or with the +/- buttons on the Wii Remote.
It's about time to wrap up this review of the console, so I'll go into some commentary on the console.
Setup for the system is quick and easy. However, I dislike how much cord was given to the sensor bar. Not only that, but how thin and fragile that cord is. It would be only too easy to break that cord, which would be a disaster.
Also, the Wii remote runs off of two AA batteries This is a bad move on Nintendo's part, as I see it. If you're buying batteries for this, do yourself a favor and get rechargeable batteries. The only explanation I can think of as for why Nintendo did this was because they were in a rush to produce the console, and put off development of a rechargeable battery for this Wii remote. I'd like to see Nintendo release a rechargeable battery for this, as they have one for the GBA-SP and the DS/DS Lite.
The control on the Wii is really quick and easy to learn. This is a nice touch, making this console accessible by anyone.
The Channels on the Wii seem incomplete, in terms of the variety they could have offered. With the Photo Editor, you can't save the picture edits you make. Also, the Opera Browser isn't available yet. I am hoping that, given time, Nintendo will continue to create and make available new channels for the Wii.
A final say: The Wii is here. The new generation of gaming is upon us. Nintendo is truly going in a different direction than competitors Microsoft and Sony, by making games accessible to everyone. And the Wii is a perfect example of this strategy. The Wii console works great. I got mine on launch day, and have been happy with it.
And there you have it ladies and gentlemen.
Staff Bios:
Thanks to an idea from UM we now have a section in the Rules and FAQs topic which is called Staff Bios. If you ever wondered anything about the Staff Team here at ToG then that’s place for you to look. Why not hop over there now and take a look?
The following link leads you straight to them: here .
ToG Survey:
Dragoness has put together a survey which we hope you’ll have a look at and share your feedback with us. We simply want to know “What made you sign up to ToG?” We have a range of poll options so please vote for whatever made you sign up here and post a comment about it. Thanks!
The Survey can be found at the following link: here.
Referral System news:
Last month we announced a new system which was added to the forum. We’re talking none other than the Referral System. We’d like to thank everyone thus far who has used the system so far and helped ToG grow. A round of applause to Linksfan who was the first member to successfully refer 4 people to the forum. Congrats Links! We hope you enjoy the 8,000 Øroms prize money.
For more details please check the following link: here.
Member of the Month:
Last month saw the return of the critically acclaimed MotM contest and you won’t be disappointed as this month it continues! Congrats to December’s MotM who is none other than…LINKSFAN!
CONGRATULATIONS!!
More information can be found on the following link: here.
Dish of the month:
Last month’s DOTM was an incredibly tight finish. Without a doubt this has been the most participated DOTM and what a close one it was! We asked what should be the DOTM concerning pasta. It was incredibly close like I mentioned but in the end Spaghetti came flew with Lasagne close behind. A big thanks to everyone who took part in that event.
A recipe for the winning option from last month can be found: here.
For December’s DOTM the dish is going to be focusing on Roast dinners. Which fits in quite nicely what with Christmas coming up. For more details, please check the following link: here.
Comic Book Tournament:
Last month saw the mighty Superman up against Captain America. This was the most one sided battle ever with Superman quite literally annihilating the Captain by 5 votes to none! Superman progresses on but December’s new tournament sees Wolverine up against his long term rival... Sabretooth. Who will win? You decide!
To vote in the battle go to the following link.
Well that’s all for this month’s update! We hope you enjoyed this update which was bought to you by the combined efforts of the Staff Team! See you next month!

This xmas template is totally banging.
I came on and thought - "This ain't ToG!!" But then realized Santa came a little early and decorated the place... Ho ho ho. I'm really digging the banner and those little stockings. Genius!
And I am sure glad to see that Yk is sticking with us. That guy stepping down would bring the end of this forum. THE END I TELL YA.
And you've made some staff bios huh? Sounds nice. I'll read 'em over now.
Nice update Rammy me boy.

WOW! Seriously, WOW! When the page loaded I was gobsmacked by this. I forgot you tend to make christmas templates for the forum, Ramster. And I love the banner. Its like a christmas tree almost with the lights round it and the star on top. And those stockings...! I thought they were clickable. Very, VERY good job on this, I love it.
And I am happy to know that YK is staying, if he left it would've been sad as he has been with this forum since its early days. Nice decision on staying YK!
And the staff bios sounds interesting. I will go and check that out... Nice addition to the forum, methinks.
